Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy says 1 502 people have died on the country roads during the festive season.
The deaths resulted from 1234 collisions, an increase from last year’s 1427.
Six provinces including KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape, and North West-recorded increases in road deaths, while Gauteng, Western Cape, and Mpumalanga saw decreases.
Creexy released the 2024/2025 festive seasons road safety report in Pretoria.
She says the increase is regrettable.
“The number of fatalities represents a year-on-year increase of 5.3% or 70 debts, compared with last year’s season, and 4.2, or in numerical terms of 50 increase in the number of crashes that involved. This is most regrettable because it reverses the incremental strides made in recent years.”
