The number of teenagers giving birth on Christmas Day in Limpopo has decreased from 50 last year to 31 this year. A total of 172 babies were born on Christmas Day across various hospitals in the province, with 90 boys and 82 girls among them. 

Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego expressed concern over the high number of teenage mothers, particularly noting the case of a 13-year-old who gave birth. 

“We are very concerned about how a 13-year-old came to be pregnant. Out of the 31 teenage mothers, the situation of this 13-year-old raises serious questions about who is responsible,” Mashego said. 

The province continues to grapple with addressing teenage pregnancies, which remain a significant public health and social issue.
