A 17-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Nerina Youth Justice Centre in Gqeberha today on charges related to the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old police constable.

Constable Callan Andrews was gunned down on New Year’s eve after he stopped to push his broken-down service vehicle.

Hawks’ spokesperson Ndimphiwe Mhlakuvana says the suspect was arrested on Saturday along with an 18-year-old suspect who will appear soon in the magistrate’s court in Gelvandale.

The two suspects will face charges of murder and robbery.

Mhlakuvana says the state has a strong case.

“He is expected to appear here, that is on the 6th of January 2025, his first court appearance thereafter we will see. There is a bit of a delay in terms of the other suspect, we are still waiting for the process, the internal process of justice and then shortly he will appear and we believe that we have got a very strong case against the alleged suspects, therefore let’s wait and see the outcomes of the court.”
