AfriForum has welcomed the decision to once again publish the 2024 matric results in the media, reviving a long-standing tradition in the country.

According to a statement released by the Department of Basic Education, they are appealing the Information Regulator’s instruction to keep the results private.

The department cited a 2022 court ruling that obliges it to publicly release the results.

AfriForum spokesperson Chanté Kelder says pending the outcome of the appeal, the Information Regulator’s instruction has been suspended, allowing the publication of results to proceed as usual.

“The department mentions that they are subject to a judgement in the past that ordered them to publish matriculant results, and this judgement was the result of the court process run by AfriForum and other parties in 2022 to ensure that the matriculants of 2021 could get their results. We are therefore part of the process this time again, and we welcome the fact this is good news for the matriculants after the long, hard-working year,” says Kelder.
