African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says the fate of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial structure will be decided on within the next two weeks.

This follows a meeting of the ANC National Working Committee and the KZN Provincial Executive Committees (PEC) which ended in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, earlier this afternoon.

The meeting was called to discuss the challenges facing the ANC in that province, after securing just 17% of the votes in the May 29 elections.

Speculation was rife that the PEC could be disbanded after its dismal performance, which saw the newly-formed MK Party dislodging it from power.

Mbalula says there are few options to the KZN PEC.

“As to what will happen in terms of what needs to be done there are various options. It could be augmentation of the PEC; it could be disbandment and re-organising the entire structure in the province that would be determined by the NWC and recommended to the NEC. So, that’s what we have done,  we have done our work, the entire PEC was here except for two people, so it was fruitful,  all our regions were here,” says Mbalula.

Mbalula has scoffed utterances by the ANC KZN Provincial-Secretary Bheki Mtolo that the NEC must also take the blame for the dismal performance in the May 29.

He says Mtolo ‘s remarks mean nothing as they have lost elections in that province.

“They mean nothing because we are at 17% and we have told them here today that everybody must keep quiet. We will keep quiet. We will communicate the decisions of the organisation, whatever that anyone says does not add to a solution and those remarks by Mtolo, whatever he says, means nothing. We are here and we are going to reclaim KZN, and we are going to build KZN and Gauteng and that’s what we are going to do,” says Mbalula.
