Another person has succumbed to injuries from a fire at the Vrygrond informal settlement near Muizenberg in Cape Town. The ward councillor in the Vrygrond area, Mandy Marr, says 16 structures were destroyed in the blaze, which broke out at around 4 o’clock this morning.

She says it is the fourth fire in the ward this month.

“We had a fatal fire that devastated approximately 16 homes and also saw the tragic loss of life of a middle-aged gentleman. My heart goes out to his friends and family. I’ve activated disaster risk management as well as living hope and gift of the givers,” she says.

Meanwhile, mopping up operations are continuing in Du Noon, Masiphumelele and Nomzamo in Strand, where hundreds of people have been displaced by fires.
