The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport says bad weather contributed to a large number of road accidents during the festive season.
Department Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says although official figures are yet to be released, preliminary reports point to an increase in the number of fatalities.
“The report that we got yesterday indicates that we are now close to 300 people dying on our roads. The terrible accident that we experienced being Van Reenen. There are two main road accidents that we experienced: Nkandla and Empangeni. There are about three major accidents, as well as the one that is at Ladysmith. So, the fatalities that we have experienced have actually increased as compared to the previous year. That is as a result of the heavy rainfall that we are experiencing,” says Sibiya.
