Currently, Joburg has at least 13 hostels and those that reside there are dissatisfied with the appalling conditions they find themselves in.
MMC Mabaso says plans to change hostels and provide decent accommodation will not come cheap.
“We need something like ten billion to fix hostels and the reality is that we won’t have that money. That is why part of the things we are proposing in the strategy of integrated development, to try and also source the other funding from other institutions of government, developers. Every cent we can get access to for the purpose of redeveloping the hostels, we will appreciate it and the strategy makes emphasis to that.”
