Former multiple boxing world champion, Isaac “Angel” Hlatshwayo will bring boxing action dubbed “Rising Stars” to his province of Limpopo this Saturday.

The Angel will stage a boxing development tournament consisting of seven bouts in Malamulele Boxing Hall on Saturday afternoon. Hlatshwayo held IBF and IBO world titles

Professional boxing action returns to Malamulele after several years. The town has been described as one of the boxing Meccas in the country by some sports enthusiasts.

The area has produced boxing champions like former IBF junior featherweight champion, Jeffrey Mathebula and Cassius “Shy Guy” Baloyi who remains the only local boxer to win six world titles in three different weight divisions.

Fourteen boxers will feature in the tournament of which ten hail from Limpopo.

For over a decade, Isaac Hlatshwayo was paid to fight but the tables have turned.  He is now a promoter and he will pay boxers who will participate in the tournament.

“I have done this for the people of Limpopo my home and of course most importantly our boxers I want them to mostly fight here rather to fight somewhere else outside the province. In the next five years, the angel promotion will be one of the best in the world with the experience I accumulated of course throughout the years of course that will come in handy of course held to shape the future of our boxers in the country.”

Meanwhile, the Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has also partnered with the Angel boxing promotion to stage the tournament.

MEC for Sports Arts and Culture, Jerry Maseko, says the Department will set aside more money to revive the sport.

“Our relationship with Hlatshwayo, who is a promoter, we have agreed that we need to allocate them a particular amount of money even though I cannot divulge the rands and cents. We are busy with our budget as a department. We need to take boxing serious which means we are going to ensure that we put a particular amount of money to assist to promote boxing. Because this is used to be the sport that characterised Limpopo historically, we produce a lot of international boxers.”

The tournament will start at two o’clock on Saturday afternoon.
