Residents are urged to exercise caution to prevent burn injuries as winter sets in. Today marks the start of National Burns Awareness Week, observed from 06 to 12 May.

According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 3.2% of people in South Africa sustain burn injuries each year.

Children, the elderly, and people living in underdeveloped or overcrowded conditions are the most affected.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba outlines measures to prevent burn injuries.

“We want to really emphasise just those basic fire safety rules of never leaving flames unattended, keeping flammable items away from heat sources, and placing stones and heaters on stable surfaces. First aid can be properly applied, things like cooling the burn under running water are crucial.”
