A 32-year-old man has made a brief appearance in the Fochville Magistrate’s Court in the Free State facing charges of attempted murder, reckless driving, and failing to assist or report an accident.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana says the matter has been postponed to February 5, 2025 for a formal bail application.

Mahanjana says the charges stem from an incident on February 20, 2021 near Mponeng Mine, where a couple encountered Musawenkosi Khawula standing next to a parked Volkswagen Polo, partially naked.

She says, “The couple approached the accused, informing him that he was trespassing on private property. Upon looking inside the vehicle, the complainant allegedly saw another man moving from the back seat to the front seat while getting dressed.”

Mahanjana adds, “After an exchange of words between the complainant and the accused, the accused allegedly returned to his car and drove away. When he reached a dead-end he executed a u-turn. He then allegedly bumped the complainant, who was standing beside the driver’s side of his vehicle, before fleeing the scene, leaving the complainant injured on the ground.”
