Three Chapter Nine Institutions say they will conduct a joint Commission of Inquiry into Pastor Timothy Omotoso’s rape case.

The CRL Rights Commission, the Commission for Gender Equality and the Human Rights Commission have held a media briefing in Pretoria on systemic failures in the justice system.

The Nigerian televangelist and his two co-accused were acquitted on all 32 charges that included rape, sexual assault, human trafficking and racketeering by High Court in the Gqeberha last week.

CRL chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi Xaluva says Omotoso’s release is a devastating blow to the victims who came forward to seek justice and to find closure from the pain they endured for many years. She also expressed disappointment at the work of the prosecutors in handling the case.

She says the mismanagement of the case by the NPA casts doubts on the justice system.

The three Commissions resolved to jointly conduct an inquiry into the processes that led to this outcome of the case. Several institutions and individuals are expected to be called to appear before an inquiry within the next few months, including the NPA and come up with possible recommendations.
