Chippa United have progressed to the Nedbank Cup round of 16. This after they beat Golden Arrows 2-1 in the first-round match at the Mpumalanga stadium in Hammarsdale this afternoon.

Arrows almost took an early lead, when Angelo Van Rooi was lucky to emerge with the ball, but Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali spotted the danger. The visitors also created their own chance a few moments later, but Aphelele Teto could not get his header on target.

The home team had another decent opportunity in the box, but Chippa’s defenders cleared the danger.

Arrows were looking menacing on counter-attack, but the striker’s tame shot did not trouble Nwabali, much to the disappointment of the home fans.

The home team played another long ball deep in the Chippa’s half but Nwabali was alert to the danger.

The visitors had a chance later on with a fierce shot on the edge of the box but goalkeeper Ismail Watenga made double saves.

Arrows almost took the lead on the stroke of half time, but Nwabali did well to make a point blank save.

The home side started the second half well, but Nwabali again denied Van Rooi with a stupendous save.

Arrows squandered another golden opportunity when they dilly-dallied in the box and the chance went abegging.

The visitors broke the deadlock from a corner kick courtesy of Sinoxolo Kwayiba twenty minutes from time.

But the home team levelled matters moments later when the referee controversially adjudged Brandon Theron’s effort to have crossed the line.

Chippa was back in front a few minutes later when Teto’s persistent pressure resulted in an own goal by Theron, who turned from hero to villain.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Chippa United.
