The Western Cape police have launched an extensive manhunt for two suspects who shot and killed an off-duty police constable while responding to a robbery in Mfuleni in Cape Town.

Thirty-two-year-old Ayanda Moyikwa from Bardale was on his way to work to pick up a colleague when he was fatally shot at Extension 6.

According to the police, the victim who was on his way to report for duty at the Cape Town International Airport, was waiting for a colleague in Gcuwa Street Mfuleni in his private vehicle when he was approached by two unknown men.

Western Cape Police Commissioner, Tembinkosi Patekile who visited the crime scene condemned the incident.

“And accordingly, he witnessed a robbery in front of this house, he was going to fetch his colleague. As he was reversing to respond to it, then the suspect apparently shot him in that area. Two men according to what we have. The suspects had guns.”

Patekile has expressed concern over the growing number of attacks on police.

“It worries us because the ones I’m told up to now it is five. As the commissioner was saying that already died. The one was in Port Elizabeth, and two in Free State and another one again in Free State this weekend. Now, this one is the fifth one. It’s a worry and it’s all constables, upcoming young ones that should be taking over this country as we retire,” says Patekile.

Moyikwa was due to celebrate his two-year-old daughter’s birthday this coming Wednesday and his on Friday. An emotional Moyikwa’s older brother, Thandikhaya Moyikwa, says the family is very distraught.

“I don’t know what I must say because it was my little brother. We were staying together, then now I’m going to stay alone here. I don’t have friends, that guy was my friend. If he is at work I stay alone here, then when he comes back, we sit together and do everything together. It’s a pain to me,” says Moyikwa.

Police have appealed to the public to come forward with information that can assist with the investigation.
