The DA in Johannesburg has welcomed the high court ruling that the City’s VIP protection policy is unconstitutional and invalid.
Yesterday, the high court in Johannesburg ruled that the VIP protection policy, which provided excessive security to municipal officials without proper threat assessments, violated the law.
The policy allocated 10 bodyguards to the Executive Mayor, eight to the Speaker of council, while members of the Mayoral Committee and Committee Chairs received between two and five officers.
DA’s Belinda Kaiser-Echeozonjoku, says, “The judgement is suspended until February 14, providing the City with time to present a threat and risk analysis justifying this ridiculous expense. We aren’t holding our breath for those as they failed to provide them for over a year and the DA has always maintained that money should be spent on residents and not on expensive bodyguards for politicians.”
