Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela is expected to visit Tlharihani TVET college, in Mamaila, Limpopo.
Four students were raped at the residence at the college on Saturday.
The suspect found eight students at the residence and raped four of them at gunpoint. He also robbed them of money and cellphones.
Manamela says they will ensure that security on campus and student residence is provided.
“We will work with the institution also, to ensure that proper support is provided to the students and that where there is a need for the institution itself to cooperate with the police that they have done so in order for the perpetrators to be apprehended,” says Manamela.
Manamela is visiting the University of Limpopo and other institutions of higher learning in the province. The aim of the visit is to monitor the registration process and safety of student accommodation.
He says there are plans to build more institutions of higher learning.
“Students who come out of school begin to diversify into the entirety of the post school education and training sector and not only to look at universities. Finally, we are building two new universities – the University of Science and Technology and also the University of Police and there are plans to build 10 more TVET college campuses over the course of the five years. But most importantly, we are encouraging universities to expand their online footprint use that as a platform to accommodate more and more students,” he says.
