The Mpolweni family in Khwenxurha in the Eastern Cape says living under appalling conditions is affecting their children’s education.

This family lives in dilapidated rondavels and is headed by the 72-year-old Nonambala Mpolweni, the sole provider for her son and granddaughter.

They have no access to electricity or running water.

Mpolweni says despite their best efforts, the family is overwhelmed by the challenges of maintaining the rondavels.

“We are struggling because we see people getting houses but I haven’t received one. I stay in this bad situation because they are all leaking. It is better now because it is not raining, but when it’s raining, I can’t even sit.”

Department of Human Settlements spokesperson Yanga Funani says intervention plans are now in place to address these cases.

“Since there’s no application from the old lady, we will send officials to evaluate her family condition and assist her with applying for a house. Temporary aides will also be mobilised. In the financial year 2024/25, our targets as articulated in our Human Settlements Development Grant business plan, include the delivery of 6 284 RDP housing units. In the Amathole District we have allocated over R117 million for 46 projects this financial year.”
