Emalahleni Local Municipality in Cacadu (formerly Lady Frere) installed a new mayor on Tuesday.

Nontombizanele Koni, an ANC provincial executive committee member, takes the reigns of the rural municipality from acting mayor Nolitha Lali. Lali was Emalahleni mayor from 2001 until 2006. In 2011 she became chief whip and political head for infrastructure development and human settlements.

In 2006 Nomveliso Nyukwana was the political head of the local authority until she was removed earlier this year. Koni was a portfolio head for corporate services at Chris Hani District Municipality. The municipality promised to release a statement on Wednesday morning. This is a developing story
