Johannesburg Emergency Services are currently conducting a search and rescue operation for an unknown number of alleged illegal miners at an abandoned mine shaft in Roodepoort, West of Johannesburg.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear at this stage, however, a number of people are understood to be trapped underground.
“It is understood that there are people trapped in this disused mine shaft. There are no injuries which have been reported related to this incident at this stage,” says Robert Mulaudzi, Johannesburg EMS spokesperson.
