Five people have lost their lives in an accident involving a light vehicle and a truck on the N3 Highway heading to Harrismith.

Four passengers from the light vehicle and the driver of the truck were declared dead on the scene.

One passenger sustained minor injuries.

Manager for the Free State Provincial EMS, Sipho Towa says recovery units are still on the scene.

Towa says the cause of the accident is still not clear.

Traffic has been backed up for about six hours as a result of the accident.
