A Gauteng police officer has been found guilty by the Johannesburg High court for the murder of her partner.

Constable Courtney Madella threw a container containing an unknown chemical at her partner, Nomalungelo Khumalo following an argument at a police barracks in Sophiatown, Johannesburg two years ago.

The substance caused severe injuries to Khumalo who died in hospital a week later.

Police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has welcomed the conviction.

IPID’s Phaladi Shuping says, “The incident was investigated by IPID and the docket handed to prosecutors and [she] was found guilty. The case was postponed to April 24, 2025 for sentencing.
