The lead investigator in the Senzo Meyiwa case, Brigadier Bongani Gininda, has denied that he was ever prevented by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) from investigating Meyiwa’s former girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.

Meyiwa was shot and killed while at Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand in 2014.

Five men are on trial for Meyiwa’s murder at the High Court in Pretoria. Two of the accused have alleged that Khumalo was behind the contract killing.

Responding to questions by defence counsel Zandile Mshololo, Gininda says although Khumalo remains a suspect, they have never been prevented from continuing to investigate her alleged involvement in the murder.

Mshololo: Making a follow-up with the person who has been identified as a suspect, and the witness says ‘No’, he was prevented by the NPA.

Gininda: No, but that’s not correct, my Lord. At no stage did the NPA say that the investigations as far as Ms Kelly Khumalo should not be conducted. In fact, on the contrary, that directive was given to investigate further and collect more evidence. So, there was no instruction from the NPA to say that Kelly Khumalo must not be pursued.
