Heavy rains have caused part of a bridge to collapse on the R529 at Dzumeri village in Limpopo, leading to road closures and traffic being rerouted.
The damaged bridge, which connects Giyani and Tzaneen, has been closed since Friday, forcing motorists onto longer alternative routes.
Some drivers have expressed frustration over the detours, with one motorist saying, “The road is closed, and it’s really inconveniencing. This is the only road we use to Tzaneen, otherwise, we must take a gravel road.”
Taxi operators are also feeling the impact. Abraham Mthombeni of the Dzumeri Taxi Association voiced concerns about vehicle damage, saying, “The poor roads are affecting our business. All routes are blocked, and we are struggling to transport our passengers.”
Residents fear that if heavy rains continue, as predicted by the South African Weather Service, schooling will be disrupted. A local resident shared concerns, stating, “It’s a problem when it rains. Learners might not get transport as the area is inaccessible. If possible, they must fix this bridge.”
Officials from SANRAL are currently assessing the damage.
