Government has implemented initiatives aimed at diversifying South Africa’s tourism industry.

Tourism Minister De Lille, together with her Deputy, visited some of the tourist destinations in Gauteng including Vilakazi Street, to encourage local and international travellers to explore Gauteng and South Africa’s diverse travel offerings.

While Gauteng is often touted as the country’s economic hub, it also offers vacation opportunities for holidaymakers.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has called on all South Africans to visit the City of Gold this festive season and experience the vast variety of tourist attractions on offer.

“Over and above we are also priding ourselves with the Johannesburg Zoo and during this festive season we have launched what we call the festive lights festival so what it means is that every day we host musicians from 7 in the evening so the zoo is life in the evening and you are able to hear the sound of lions and so on so encourage people to visit the zoo.”

Meanwhile, beneficiaries of the Department of Tourism’s activation plan say they are grateful for the opportunities they were provided with.

Kagiso Kekana (28) from Hamanskraal says being included in the programme has led to his permanent employment at the Dinokeng Game Reserve.

“So, basically I was introduced to the programme last year and being a beneficiary has opened up so many doors and opportunities for me. I have been offered a position at Dinokeng Game Reserve as part of management through this programme. So to be honest, it has been quite an eye-opener for quite a lot of young people as well in the rural areas because tourism is now being viewed in a different eye. I am glad to say that it has done something good for me”
