Police have warned people of an increase in online scams targeting holiday makers of the Ilembe District, north of Durban. They say the scams range from fake accommodation bookings and guided tour packages – to stealing people’s personal information.
The police’s cybercrime unit is investigating the cases that visitors to this area have opened. Tourism body, Enterprise Ilembe, says the region that is known for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, has seen an increase in tourists.
Chief Executive Officer Siyabonga Mazibuko says criminals are also cashing in on this.
The police and Enterprise Ilembe say the scams that have been reported, include fake accommodation listings for rooms that are unavailable or establishments that do not exist.
Fake guided tours are also offered. Mazibuko advises people to use reputable booking platforms and to call establishments to confirm bookings.
Visitors can also check online reviews. Mazibuko says if a deal sounds too good to be true, then it probably is not true.
