Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says the lack of infrastructure continues to be a major problem, especially in rural provinces.
She is in Mpumalanga to monitor the reopening of schools for the 2025 academic year, accompanied by her deputy Reginah Mhaule and MEC Cathy Dlamini.
Gwarube says the lack of school infrastructure will be discussed at the Cabinet Lekgotla next week.
“Infrastructure is a huge challenge. We also understand that budget constraints are a huge challenge in the province. However, we are pleased to see that the expenditure of the province in so far as the infrastructure budget is ticking up, which means that there is a commitment from their side to deliver against infrastructure. Because of course, there are massive infrastructure gaps here. This is one of our rural provinces. There are still schools that they want to rebuild. They have managed to essentially build proper sanitary facilities in the various schools.”

The first school visit is KaMagugu Inclusive School in Ehlanzeni District which currently facilitates 347 learners.
