Johannesburg motorists say it’s unfair to be expected to pay unknown speeding fines at a roadblock, when stopped by the city’s Metro Police.

The JMPD is experiencing a backlog of issuing Camera generated speeding fines to motorists who have infringed the road speed limit.

JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla say they’re aware of delays in delivering infringement notices and are addressing the challengers, to enhance efficiency.

Fihla elaborates on some of the reasons motorists do not receive their fines.

“We understand the frustrations of those who encounter outstanding fines at road blocks without prior notification. The Johannesburg metropolitan police department complies with AARTO regulations for issuing infringement notices, however various factors such as incorrect address information and issuing of postal services, can affect the delivery of these services particularly for out of town motorists.”

“The AARTO system in South Africa oversees traffic violations and penalties, including fines from traffic cameras and the process includes traffic cameras capturing images of vehicles committing offenses like speeding and evidence including vehicle registration and offense details as recorded. Now, the JMPD is aware of potential delays and processing and delivering infringement notices, we are actively addressing these contributing factors to enhance efficiency.”
