Springbok and Stormers stalwart, Steven Kitshoff, has been forced to retire from rugby due to a serious neck injury.

The double Rugby World Cup winner who played 83 test matches for South Africa, made the decision after seeking medical advice.

He had been sidelined since September after sustaining a career-threatening neck injury while on Currie Cup duty for the Western Province rugby union team.

At the time, he had just returned to the field from a serious knee injury.

Following surgery and an extensive rehabilitation programme, the 33-year-old prop has been left with significantly reduced rotation of his neck.

The advice from a specialist neurosurgeon was that there would be a high risk of another injury should he continue playing.
