KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane says her department is investigating allegations about the misuse of two state ambulances that they have received over the past two days.
Visiting Prince Mshiyeni Hospital to welcome New Year’s babies, Simelane said one of the ambulances were allegedly parked outside a Durban tavern for hours.
She says one case came to light when a member of the public called Premier Thami Ntuli, while the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Secretary, Bheki Mtolo forwarded a video to her about the other incident.
Simelane has condemned such abuse, saying ambulances are life-saving equipment.
She says, “A day before that the provincial secretary of the ANC uBabu Mtolo sent me a video of an ambulance that was in eThekwini and was transporting building material. We have followed up and we’ve done preliminary investigations and we discovered that ambulance actually comes from Ugu district. We are working on that and I want to say to the communities we appreciate that kind of ceba or mpimpa hotline.”
