The Cash-in-transit Association in South Africa has called for high intelligence to deal with the scourge of cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has emerged as the most dangerous province in South Africa when it comes to CIT robberies.
More than 200 CIT robberies were recorded last year, with KZN leading at 27%, followed by Gauteng at 25%.
Citasa’s Incident and Analytics manager Dr Alice Maree says CIT criminals are highly trained and need to be dealt with in the same manner
“So, we saw in our groups of cash-in-transit robbers that there’s different nationalities working together. For example, last year, there was a bomb that specifically came from a neighboring country. And his skill was just to place the explosives and detonate it. We in South Africa need more intelligence, information that can be put into intelligence, because there’s always someone who sees something or knows something. I mean, that is the only way that you can be preventative.”
