Some civic organisations and community members at villages along the Beitbridge borderline in Musina, Limpopo, have lauded the deployment of modern technology as critical in fighting border crime.

The Department of Home Affairs and Border Management Authority deployed drones at high-priority border crossings, including the Beitbridge Border between South Africa and Zimbabwe during the festive season.

The initiative helped in combating over two thousand illegal border crossings.

Members of civic organisation, Border Watch say they are noticing the effectiveness of drones in the monitoring of border movements and the reduction of crime.

“If those drones can be deployed even at the problematic areas such as Bende Mutale and Police stations it would be helpful going forward. It was tough, almost every hour there were reports of stolen vehicles smuggled into Zimbabwe, we were always on high alert. As far as I’m concerned, border crime has been reduced significantly, we are working with police and other stakeholders like BMA.”
