More details are emerging in an incident in which police found the bodies of six suspected illegal miners at a disused mine in Diepkloof, Johannesburg on Friday.
Police say the bodies were found on top of each other in the vicinity of shaft 17. Each had a gunshot wound to the head.
The deceased apparently had their hands tied with ropes.
Gauteng police are investigating cases of murder.
Provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo elaborates: “The victims are suspected to be illegal miners. It is reported that a man was fetching fire wood when he noticed the body in the veld and notified the security officer who then called the police.
Upon searching the area, police found more decomposed bodies. The motive for the killing can not be confirmed at this stage.”
