A 30-year-old farmer, Pieter Grobelar, accused of distributing expired food products, has been released on R8 000 bail by the Secunda Magistrates’ Court in Mpumalanga.

The court also requested that Grobelar surrender his passport and report to a local police station every Monday and Friday.

He was arrested by the Hawks at his farm in Charl Cilliers following a tip-off about him allegedly repackaging and distributing expired food and other items for retailers in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.

Provincial Hawks Spokesperson, Magonseni Nkosi, says the case has been postponed to next month.

“On our arrival here (at the farm), we found that there are a lot of plastic packages and pricing machines – that means that the person is really selling the food, and we managed to send our team down the ground to do further investigation. We have identified some few shops that were recipients of these foodstuffs, but our investigation continues. The suspect, a 30-year-old farmer, did appear in the Secunda Magistrates’ Court and his case was postponed to the 27th of March for further investigation.”
