With some municipalities in the Northern Cape battling with water supply to its residents, the Department of Cooperative Governance says the continuing water challenges in the province range from old infrastructure and limited funding to complete bulk projects.
The department says it has collaborated with the Department of Water and Sanitation and the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agency to support to struggling municipalities.
Gamagara Local Municipality has been battling to supply water to residents in Olifantshoek since September.
Department spokesperson Tebogo Monyo says, “The department is assisting struggling municipalities with project initiatives, project planning and development through grants such as municipal infrastructure grants. We further assist municipalities with maintenance projects through municipal support intervention programs. The continuing water challenges we are experiencing range from issues such as old infrastructure, limited funding to complete bulk projects in shorter periods, lack of operation and maintenance and all these are also exacerbated by climate change.”
