The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has welcomed the Gauteng government’s decision to dismiss officials implicated in corruption related to the Anglo Ashanti Hospital.

The officials, from the Gauteng Health and Infrastructure Development departments, faced charges over alleged irregularities in awarding contracts for the hospital’s refurbishment in 2022.

The SIU’s investigation revealed evidence of financial misconduct involving several individuals from the two departments.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kanyago says, “The Gauteng government acted on the SIU’s recommendations and charged the officials involved. This led to five officials being dismissed, three receiving final written warnings, one being acquitted, and the other was not charged because they left the department.”

Kanyago adds: “The disciplinary actions show that state institutions are acting on the results of the SIU investigation and implementing the consequences to hold officials implicated to account, recover assets and financial losses incurred by these institutions, and prevent further losses.”

The dismissals highlight efforts to address corruption and ensure accountability in public institutions.
