This is one of the shafts that illegal miners used to emerge from underground between November and December last year, at the height of Operation Vala Umgodi.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone says, “The body suspected to be of an illegal miner was retrieved from Margaret Shaft, Stilfontein. According to information, the body, which was already in a state of decomposition, was discovered by the shaft security personnel who were sweeping level 16 of the shaft. The cause of death is still unknown and an inquest docket has been opened for investigation.”
