Rand Water has warned Gauteng municipalities that it will resort to restrictions if they fail to implement contingency conservation measures.

It says the entire water system in the province will collapse if consumers don’t reduce their consumption.

The bulk water supplier has called on the Tshwane and Johannesburg metros to encourage residents to lower their water consumption as storage levels in reservoirs drop rapidly.

Rand Water spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo explains, “We are really trying to prevent Day-Zero. It is possible but we’re ensuring that it’s not going to be happening in our areas of supply.

If it comes to that push – we will have to throttle the system. What we’re saying is we will not allow our reservoirs to run completely empty. We will throttle the system if municipalities are failing to manage the consumption.”
