The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has urged road users and motorists in particular to continue to be extra vigilant as the volume of traffic on some of the province’s roads is expected to increase, starting this weekend.
This as holidaymakers are expected to start streaming into the Eastern Cape from other provinces ahead of the festive season.
Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says, “Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha believes that the next two weekends leading up to Christmas, starting from this weekend will be very very defining to how the province is going to fare in terms of reducing the number of crashes and fatalities this festive season. It is for that reason that he is calling road users to be extra vigilant, obey the rules of the road at all times and be patient with one another. Our traffic law enforcement officers are strategically placed on all the major routes particularly those connected to other provinces.”
Last week, the Eastern Cape Liquor Board in partnership with the provincial Transport Department launched the Safer Festive Campaign in Gqeberha.
A giant roadblock was set up on the M4 freeway of Gqeberha, stopping all who drove by.
Dozens of officers and their stakeholders were hard at work weeding out those who broke the law.
This in an effort to ensure that road users remain safe during the festive season and limit the amount of road fatalities.
