Spain’s former soccer federation boss Luis Rubiales told a court on Tuesday that player Jenni Hermoso had given her consent to being kissed on the mouth.
The incident was witnessed by millions of television viewers and an entire stadium after the Spanish women’s team won the 2023 World Cup.
However, Hermoso said she did not agree to the kiss on the mouth and that had tainted what should have been one of the happiest days of her life.
Rubiales faces charges of sexual assault, and attempting to coerce Hermoso into publicly saying the kiss was consensual.
Testifying last week, Hermoso said she was pressured to agree to a statement downplaying the kiss.
When she refused, she says, former women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda approached her brother and told him that her career would suffer.
Rubiales says there was no sexual intent in the kiss.
Asked whether he normally kissed people on the lips, Rubiales told the court the occasion and the fact he had known Hermoso for a long time warranted it.
However, he said he had realized almost immediately that the gesture was a mistake.
The prosecution is seeking a two and a half year prison sentence for Rubiales.
A verdict in the case is expected in March, about a month after witness testimony ends.
