Sabie illegal miners denied bail, remanded in custody

Twenty-eight illegal miners, who are part of the 153 miners brought to the surface from a disused mine shaft in Sabie, Mpumalanga, have been remanded in custody.

The group of miners amongst them Zimbabwe nationals appeared briefly in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court.

The illegal miners were brought to the surface in an elaborate operation that lasted three days.

They are charged with contravening the Immigration Act. Their case has been postponed to January 27 for Social Workers assessment.

Magistrate Gerald Gunguluza denied the group bail. “Your matter is then postponed respectively 27.01.2025 for assessment by social workers. All are in custody, with no bail. LASA or Legal Aid South Africa will be available for those who opted for it and your own private attorneys for those who opted for their private attorney to be before the court on that day. Custody no bail all of you.”
