The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms causing heavy downpours, with a possibility of hail as well as strong damaging winds and excessive lightning for seven provinces.
These include parts of Gauteng, the North West, Free State, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
SAWS Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says these adverse weather conditions are expected to continue until December 24.
Thobela says, “For the central and the eastern parts we’re expecting more extreme weather conditions. That would be more severe thunderstorms, more disruptive rain.”
“For the next coming two to three days into just before the 24th, we’ll be seeing a lot of rainy conditions and wetter days over the northeastern parts covering areas over the Free State, the North West and parts of Gauteng into KwaZulu-Natal as well as Mpumalanga.”
He adds, “We’re still expecting more rainy conditions, more extreme weather for the eastern parts and more and more high temperatures across these areas.”
