Top seed and world number one Jannik Sinner has successfully defended his Australian Open title to become the first Italian tennis player in history to win three Grand Slam titles.
He started the final on a career-best 20-match winning streak and dominated world number two, Alexander Zverev of Germany, to record a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory.
This was the first time the top two seeds have made the final in Melbourne since Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal five years ago.
“First of all, I would like to start with a tough day for you and your whole team, your family. You have an incredible team; you are an amazing player. Keep believing in yourself because I think we as players and the whole people involved in this know how strong you are, not only as a player but as an individual, so keep it up, keep on working hard because we all believe that, and you can have this one as well, so we wish you only the best,” says Sinner.
Taking this trophy home for a second time feels absolutely unreal!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ To my team and all of you who’ve cheered me on from every corner of the world – thank you! Huge respect to @AlexZverev for an incredible match 🤝🏻🤝🏻🤝🏻🇦🇺 @AustralianOpen pic.twitter.com/uWwH0PRxxg
