The Department of Social Development will appeal the judgment on the COVID-19 social relief of distress grant handed down by the North Gauteng High Court, last month.

This follows the case brought by the Institute for Economic Justice and #Paythegrants movement, regarding the SRD grants.

SASSA stopped the relief grant payments to all accounts that were suspected to be fraudulent to allow a process where beneficiaries have to verify their details.

The department says it respects the judicial process, but it is not in agreement with the judgment and its implications for the administration of the SRD.

Acting DDG of Corporate Support Services, Lumka Oliphant says they are committed to serving vulnerable South Africans who rely on this social grant.

“After careful consideration and having sought legal counsel, the department has decided to pursue an appeal against the orders issued. We remain steadfast in our efforts to balance the need for accountability with the practicalities of delivering critical support to millions of beneficiaries. Sassa will continue to administer the CSRD as per existing guidelines to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. The department calls for patience and understanding as it works towards a sustainable resolution that upholds the principles of justice and the constitution.”
