The year 2024 has proven to be yet another eventful one for South Africa.
The country’s political landscape saw a major shift as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) failed to secure a majority win in the May polls, giving birth to the Government of National Unity.
Prominent politicians were also arrested, including former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the ANC’s Pule Mabe and the party’s Zizi Kowdwa. Most of the charges were related to corruption.
Perhaps among the most alarming highlights of the year were the deaths of several children due to incidents of alleged food-borne illness. This led to law enforcement agencies clamping down on illegal or expired goods and pushing for strict regulation of spaza shops in the country.
The scourge of illegal mining once again reared its ugly head in places such as Stilfontein in the North West and in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
On a sad and sombre note, the country also saw some of its artists, actors and actresses, politicians and other key figures within their respective sectors pass away.
