A suspect arrested in Johannesburg last week in connection with suspicious transactions, allegedly linked to terror financing, has appeared for the first time today in the Lichtenburg Magistrate’s Court in North West.
The case has been postponed to Friday for a formal bail application.
The Hawks say the suspect is accused of purchasing Bitcoin worth R11 500 through the Luno platform in November 2017, and the cryptocurrency was then reportedly transferred to a wallet associated with an organisation describing itself as an independent charity.
Hawks’ spokesperson, Philane Nkwalase says, “The investigations continue. Whether there are other transactions that happened afterwards, that is the subject of our investigation and of course guided by the NPA, the investigations continue. There might be other charges that could be added to this one.”
