A second witness, a police officer will continue to testify in the trial of seven-year-old Joslin Smith in the High Court in the Saldanha Bay Circuit in the Western Cape today. The girl went missing a year ago.
The officer has so far recounted the events of February the 19th when the child went missing. He says they received a call from radio control that a child was missing in the Middelpos informal settlement.
He testified that Joslin’s mother, Kelly Smith, who was standing on the roadside stopped them and said her child had disappeared.
Smith, Jacquen Appolis and the third co-accused Steveno van Rhyn have pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping and human trafficking.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila says, “One of the things he corroborated is that when they met with Kelly, she looked calm, she didn’t look hysterical like someone who’s just lost a child. They went around searching for the child. Later on, they met during the search in the night – they met Kelly’s boyfriend Boeta and one thing he said was that she was almost in tears, very happy to see her boyfriend which is something also Constable Gongotha says.”
