Limpopo Transport MEC Violet Mathye has wished speedy recovery to 90 bus passengers who were injured when the bus overturned at Monsterlus in Limpopo.

The injured were taken to various hospitals and some treated at the scene.

The crash happened yesterday but only came to light today.

Authorities say the driver of a Great North Transport bus lost control.

Meanwhile, DA has expressed concerns about the state of the buses owned by government.

DA spokesperson on transport Jacques Smalle says the government is operating unroadworthy buses.

“As the Democratic Alliance, we have been at the forefront of calling for urgent action. We recently exposed through Scopa reports that GNT knowingly operated unroadworthy buses, endangering thousands of passengers,” says Smalle.

Meanwhile, the R21 northbound near the OR Tambo Airport has been opened and cleared for traffic following its closure due to a fatal bus crash.

Sixteen people have died and more than 40 others injured when a bus which was trying to swerve to avoid crashing onto a motor vehicle overturned.

Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Thabiso Makgato, says, “We had a very terrible accident, earlier on this morning at about 7 o’clock. So, the freeway had been closed on R21. It was closed. So, we just finished (with) the scene and we just opened the freeway just now, and traffic is flowing.”
