The University of the Western Cape are aiming to end the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and have the Hollywood Bets League title firmly in their sights.
UWC finished as runners-up in the last few seasons but also competed in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
UWC have improved in leaps and bounds over the last few seasons. But they are still playing second fiddle to Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, having finished as runners-up in the last few seasons.
One of their new recruits Mmabatho Mogale says they will be gunning to win the league and end Sundowns’ dominance.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a big pressure but I feel like with the quality players that UWC still has and the coaches and staff, I think we are capable of retaining position 2 or even winning the league so it’s up to us, even our coach said that they can give us this but it’s up to us if we want to achieve, but the goal of the team is to win the league.”
Last season, UWC won the CAF Women’s Champions League Zonal COSAFA Qualifier tournament in Malawi. That enabled them to represent the COSAFA Zone at the CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco along with league champions, Sundowns.
Unfortunately, they bowed out in the group stages in Morocco, but Mogale says they’re determined to qualify for that tournament again.
“This year we are just willing to push so that we can go to COSAFA and get to CAF so that we can gain experience.”
Mogale recently joined UWC from Janine van Wyk’s team, JVW. She is also part of the Banyana Banyana squad for the two friendly matches against Lesotho and is hoping to ply her trade abroad in future.
“As much as I am moving from one team to another it teaches me how to interact with different people, for instance, if one day I will be able to go abroad I will know how to treat different kinds of people and their religion and stuff it’s a variety of people, so it teaches me to learn and grow,”
The Women’s League is currently in recess.
