Police Minister Senzo Mchunu says government remains committed to prioritising the well-being of police officers.
Mchunu was speaking at a three-day Employee Health and Wellness workshop in Boksburg, Benoni.
The workshop aims to tackle mental health challenges faced by police officers. Mchunu says police officers need to be supported in order to achieve their goals.
“We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the mental and emotional struggles of our members. The impact of prolonged exposure to high-stress environments is well-documented and we must act decisively to safeguard their well-being.”
He has encouraged South Africans to view police officers as ordinary human beings who face challenges as well.
“People in South Africa don’t want to hear that police officers have trauma, police have this problem, and they can’t work because they demand service and they demand service now. They don’t care about whatever problem they have; therefore, this is part of making sure that the conditions inside are solved to perform our duties without any hinders.”
