The Western Cape has recorded the highest number of gang-related murders in the country. This is according to Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.

In a media briefing earlier today, Mchunu said the province recorded 263 gang-related murder cases during the third quarter from the 1 October 2024 to 31 December 2024.

Mchunu says on the 27 February law enforcement authorities will be reviewing police activity in the country’s high murder zones in an attempt to restore peace and order to the areas.

“A large number of these murders, collectively amounting to 135 murders, which occurred in Bishop Lavis, Mitchells Plain, Kleinvlei, Delft and Elsies River. These are Cape Town’s own murder meccas in terms of our observations. The issue of gang-related violence requires a rethink in approach because this is not only a historical matter, but it is also repetitive in nature,” says Mchunu.
